Over the years, I have occasionally come across other works by the same artist, but I was never able to find out much information about him. I have also seen requests for information from other art lovers and so, set up this website to try to help to research the life, times and art of Garman Morris.Garman (sometimes mis-spelt Garmon) Morris is mentioned in The Dictionary of Neglected Artists 1880 - 1950, so presumably lived sometime between those dates. He flourished 1900-30. This prolific artist appears to have painted also under the name of G.M. Avondale (not sure if this is true). The subjects were mostly fishing boats off the coast or shore scenes. He travelled extensively around the coast of UK and painted in France and Holland. He seems to have lived around Essex or East Anglia (or possibly both).Garmon Morris exhibited two watercolours at Elands Art Gallery in Exeter in 1906 and 1907, entitled 'The Coast near Ilfracombe', and 'St. Michael's Mount'. Some of his work was made into prints, and C.W. Faulkner & Co. Ltd., published some coastal scenes as postcards. The prints are of very good quality, and seem often to be mistaken for actual watercolours. The larger works are usually signed in full and titled, whereas the smaller sketches are often initialled. Please feel free to contribute as much knowledge as you can. It would be nice if we could have pictures of as many of his works as possible (and interesting to have the prices sold at auction). As my first step, I have googled him and added the relevant detail from the various websites I have come across so the majority of this site is a list of his pictures, with details of where they were sold at auction. If anyone would like to buy or sell a GM please let me know and I will feature it here. Just look for a 'For Sale' or 'Wanted' tag on the right.

Who was Garman Morris?

Off The East Coast

History: 0 bids

This auction is for a large and extensive coastal view by the artist GARMAN MORRIS, who flourished circa 1900-1930 and who has fully signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and entitled it Babbcombe Bay in the lower left. The painting depicts a view of a sweeping coastline with a sandy bay to the right, with boats drawn up onto the beach and a jetty jutting out to sea, with a couple of sailing boats alongside. There are three more yachts out to sea. The technique and colouring of this painting are very reminscent of the Devon views of John Shapland.

Babbacombe is a small seaside resort just outside Torquay but, according to an Encyclopaedia published in 1932 is remembered for a more gruesome reason. In 1885 John Lee was chargd with murdering his employer, Miss Keyse, in her house there. He swore his innocence, but was found guilty and sentenced to death. Three times the hangman tried to execute him, but each time was unable to do so. Lee, therefore, was kept in prison until released in 1907.

According to Jeremy Wood's useful book 'Hidden Talents' -

'Garman Morris was a painter in watercolour of marines and coastal scenes. This prolific artist appears to have painted also under the name of G. M. Avondale. The subjects were mostly fishing boats or shore scenes and were painted along the South Coast, with some Cornish and East Anglian views. Garman Morris exhibited two watercolours at Elands Art Gallery in Exeter in 1906 and 1907, entitled 'The Coast near Ilfracombe' and 'St. Michael's Mount'.

Some of his work was made into prints and C. W. Faulkner and Co. published some coastal scenes as postcards. The larger works are usually signed in full, whereas the smaller sketches are often initialled.'

The painting is framed with washlines and is framed in a 3/4" (2cm) gilt frame. It is ready to hang.

Image size: 19 1/2" x 9 1/2" - 49.5cm x 24cm

Frame size: 26 1/4" x 17" - 66.5cm x 43cm

Medium: Watercolour/gouache

Condition: Excellent. The mount and frame are also in very good condition.

Quote: I bought this delicate watercolour by seascape artist Garman Morris because I felt sorry for it! Sadly it does have some damage to the edges due to damp, but the main body of the painting appears to be fine. Perhaps some kind soul out there will look after it. It is titled 'Misty Evening' and comes unframed. Low start due to condition. Prices for his work often go into the low hundreds. The full size is 21" by nearly 8". Please contact me if you have any queries :Unquote

Quote: A pair of watercolours by the prolific yet largely un-recorded artist Garman Morris - one titled "moonrise" and the other "In Robin Hood Bay", both initialled lower right G.M. Garmon Morris is mentioned in The Dictionary of Neglected Artists 1880 - 1950 and flourished between 1900 and 1930. This prolific artist appears to have painted also under the name of G.M. Avondale. The subjects were mostly fishing boats off the coast or shore scenes. He travelled extensively around the coast and also painted in France and Holland. He seems to have lived around Essex or East Anglia (or possibly both). Garmon Morris exhibited two watercolours at Elands Art Gallery in Exeter in 1906 and 1907, entitled 'The Coast near Ilfracombe', and 'St. Michael's Mount'. : Unquote

This watercolour is signed and inscribed, unfortunately the painting has had a small amount cut off on the left hand side consequently the cut off is at the beginning of the inscription hence I cannot quite decipher the location (should someone recognize it I would be very grateful to have this information) I have included a separate photograph covering this.
(I am informed the inscription almost certainly relates to the lighthouse).
